Ivory Coast in pole position to host 2026 France’s Trophée des Champions
Ivory Coast has emerged as the frontrunners to host the prestigious Trophée des Champions later this year.
Per reports, the West African nation is currently leading the race ahead of Democratic Republic of the Congo to host the high-profile clash between the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France winners.
The fixture is penciled in for mid-August, with proposed dates set between the 15th and 16th.
The potential selection of Abidjan underscores the growing influence of African venues in hosting elite European football events. French football authorities have increasingly explored opportunities to take marquee fixtures beyond traditional borders, aiming to expand global reach and engage wider fanbases.
Ivory Coast’s strong candidacy has been bolstered by a recent inspection visit from a French delegation, which reportedly left impressed by the country’s infrastructure, organizational capacity, and overall readiness. The nation’s ability to deliver on big occasions has already been demonstrated earlier this year.
In March, Ivory Coast successfully staged the Coupe de la Ligue final between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais, an event widely viewed as a logistical and commercial success. That experience has significantly strengthened its case to host yet another major French football spectacle.
While the Democratic Republic of the Congo remains in contention, all indications suggest Abidjan currently holds the edge. The final decision, however, rests with the board of directors of the Ligue de Football Professionnel, who are expected to determine the host nation on Wednesday.
Should Ivory Coast secure the rights, it would mark another milestone for football on the continent—reinforcing Africa’s growing status as a viable and attractive destination for elite international club competitions.
