Jess Thorup has insisted he will not step down as Al Ahly head coach following his side’s 3-0 defeat to Pyramids, apologising to supporters while acknowledging a costly loss of control during a decisive spell in the match.

The Danish coach faced questions over his future after Monday’s result in the Egyptian Premier League title phase, but responded with a clear message about his intentions, as pressure grows in the closing stages of the campaign.

Thorup said his team’s performance had shown promise early on before being undone by key moments, including missed chances and what he described as an incorrect refereeing decision.

“We made mistakes that allowed Pyramids to get back into the game… We reacted well after conceding the first goal and even scored, but the goal was disallowed. After reviewing the play, I didn’t see any offside,” said Thorup.

His comments reflected frustration at a turning point that he believes shifted the momentum of the match, with Al Ahly unable to recover after the setback.

Despite creating opportunities, the team struggled to convert them into goals, a problem Thorup highlighted as a recurring issue.

“The problem is that we create chances but we don’t score. Meanwhile, the Pyramids had a striker who only needed two chances to score a brace.”

The result leaves Al Ahly facing an uphill task in the title race, as they attempt to close the gap on their rivals in the final phase of the season.

Thorup acknowledged the disappointment of supporters, many of whom had expected a stronger showing in such a crucial fixture.

“I sincerely apologize to the fans who came hoping for a victory. I understand their frustration… But I will not resign. If such a decision is made, it will not come from me,” he stated.

The coach’s firm stance comes amid increasing scrutiny, with the defeat raising further questions about consistency and execution in key matches.

While the team showed flashes of control in the first half, Thorup admitted that lapses in concentration and efficiency proved decisive.

He also emphasised that the current squad is still developing, pointing to a longer-term plan rather than immediate results as the foundation of his work at the club.

“We are working on a long-term project. You can’t build a team in a single transfer window. It takes time.”

That perspective suggests a focus on gradual progress, even as expectations remain high at a club accustomed to competing for titles.

The gap at the top of the table means Al Ahly must now respond quickly to keep their ambitions alive.

Al Ahly sit third in the championship group with 44 points, six behind leaders Zamalek and three adrift of Pyramids, leaving little margin for further setbacks as the season approaches its conclusion.

The coming fixtures are likely to test both the squad’s resilience and the manager’s approach, with the margin for error narrowing.

For now, Thorup has made it clear that he intends to remain in charge, placing the emphasis on improvement rather than departure.
