Mamelodi Sundowns coach Cardoso frustrated after Richards Bay draw
Head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns Miguel Cardoso has described his side’s goalless draw against Richards Bay as a “difficult” outing, after the Brazilians dropped crucial points in the Betway Premiership title race.
The result at a packed Umhlathuze Sports Complex proved costly for Sundowns, who had the opportunity to close the gap at the top after Orlando Pirates were also held to a 1-1 draw by Kaizer Chiefs earlier in the day. Instead, Pirates remain top of the standings with 59 points, just one ahead of Sundowns.
Despite entering the fixture knowing the importance of capitalizing on their rivals’ slip-up, Sundowns were unable to break down a disciplined and determined Richards Bay side.
The home team produced a resilient defensive display, frustrating the league champions with compact organisation and physical duels throughout the encounter, ultimately stifling every attacking attempt from the visitors.
Speaking after the match, Cardoso acknowledged the challenge his side faced on the day and admitted that Sundowns were unable to execute their game plan effectively.
“Difficult match as expected, what we saw on the pitch, a lot of duels, very difficult pitch to play,” Cardoso told SuperSport TV. “We knew that other teams were not able to win here for some reason.”
The Sundowns coach praised Richards Bay’s fighting spirit and intensity, noting that their approach made it difficult for his team to impose their usual style of play.
“This team of Richards Bay is a team that fight. It’s not the way they play because they don’t play, but they are aggressive on the transition,” he said. “Especially in the moments when we need to put everything into trying to get the points, but we left it.”
Sundowns created several openings but failed to find the decisive touch in the final third, something Cardoso believes ultimately cost them maximum points.
“We didn’t score here and there, and then of course we took the responsibility of trying to shift the victory in the last stages and we exposed ourselves,” he added. “So that’s what it is.”
The draw leaves the title race finely balanced as the season enters its decisive stretch, with just a single point separating the top two sides.
