Luca Zidane taken off after concussion in Granada defeat

Granada have confirmed that Luca Zidane sustained a concussion after being forced off during their 4-2 defeat to Almeria, with the injury raising short-term concerns but not threatening his availability for the 2026 World Cup.

The goalkeeper was substituted late in Sunday’s Spanish second division encounter after suffering a head injury, prompting immediate concern among Algerian supporters.

He was taken to hospital for further assessment, where he remained under close observation following the incident.

Granada head coach Pacheta provided an update on Zidane’s condition after the match, stating:
” He remained under observation, he was dazed ,”

The comments underline the cautious approach being taken, which is standard procedure in cases involving head injuries. Medical staff are expected to follow strict concussion protocols, ensuring a gradual and carefully monitored return to training before any competitive action is considered.

As a result, Zidane’s immediate availability remains uncertain. The timeline for his return will depend on how he responds in the coming days, with no clear indication yet as to whether he will be fit for Granada’s next league fixture against Zaragoza on Friday.

His recovery process will be closely evaluated before any decision is made.

Despite the short-term doubts, there is no indication at this stage that the injury will affect his participation in the 2026 World Cup. Unlike more severe physical injuries such as ligament damage, concussions — when properly managed — typically do not lead to extended absences from the game.

This provides some reassurance for Algeria, particularly at a time when there is instability in the goalkeeping department.

The confirmed withdrawal of Anthony Mandréa, along with uncertainty surrounding Melvin Mastil, has already created concern around the position.

While Zidane’s condition is not considered serious in the long term, it highlights the current vulnerability within the squad. With a major international tournament approaching, head coach Vladimir Petkovic will be keen to ensure that there are no setbacks in Zidane’s recovery and that he can return to full fitness without complications.
