Relebohile Mofokeng set for possible farewell Soweto Derby
Relebohile Mofokeng could be walking out at the FNB Stadium on Sunday in what may prove to be his final appearance in the Soweto Derby, with growing European interest casting uncertainty over his immediate future at Orlando Pirates.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder has steadily built a reputation as one of the most exciting young talents in the South African top flight, and his record in this fixture already underlines his growing influence.
In five previous derby outings against Kaizer Chiefs, he has contributed one goal and three assists, showing an ability to shape high-pressure encounters.
While his overall derby performances have fluctuated, Mofokeng has still delivered moments of significance. In February’s emphatic 3-0 win, he did not score but played a key creative role, assisting Oswin Appollis in a move that highlighted his vision in tight spaces.
He also left a decisive mark earlier in the rivalry, netting the winner in a league clash in May last year.
Nicknamed “President yama 2K,” the Bafana Bafana international arrives for this latest instalment in strong form. He has recorded 10 league goals and seven assists this season, numbers that reflect both consistency and growing maturity in the final third.
He now stands just two goal contributions away from reaching 19 for the campaign, a milestone achieved by only a select group of Premier Soccer League performers in recent years.
That list includes Deon Hotto, Bradley Grobler, and Monnapule Saleng, placing Mofokeng in elite company should he reach the mark.
Since breaking into the Orlando Pirates senior setup in 2022, he has accumulated 29 goals in 112 appearances, a return that has steadily elevated his status within the domestic game.
With speculation intensifying around a potential move abroad, Sunday’s derby could carry added significance beyond rivalry and points.
A standout performance would not only strengthen Pirates’ ambitions but also further enhance Mofokeng’s growing reputation as one of the league’s most valuable young assets.
