Tanzania closer to historic VAR introduction as league infrastructure nears completion
Tanzania’s top-flight football is on the verge of a major technological shift, with the fourth phase of its infrastructure development programme now nearing completion—paving the way for the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in domestic competition.
The initiative, driven under the leadership of Tanzania Football Federation president Wallace Karia, is being described as a landmark step that could significantly reshape officiating standards in the country’s Premier League.
Once fully implemented, the system is expected to place Tanzania among the pioneers on the continent, with projections suggesting it could become the first nation across East, West, Central and Southern Africa to successfully roll out VAR in its domestic league.
Football authorities say the move is aimed at improving fairness, accuracy, and transparency in match officiating—longstanding concerns across African football.
The integration of VAR is also expected to enhance trust in refereeing decisions and strengthen the overall credibility of the league.
The Tanzania Football Federation has been steadily investing in modern infrastructure as part of broader reforms to elevate the domestic game and align it with global standards.
With the final phase of development approaching completion, attention now turns to testing, training, and implementation timelines before VAR is officially introduced into league matches.
If successfully executed, the project would mark one of the most significant technological advancements in African domestic football in recent years, signaling a new era for the Tanzanian Premier League.
