Nigeria midfielder Kelechi Nwakali marks return after lengthy injury layoff
Nigerian international Kelechi Nwakali has made his return to first-team action for Barnsley, after almost one-year spell on the sidelines with injury.
The midfielder made substitute appearance on his return as Barnsley succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Stevenage FC in the League One. He was introduced in the second half to mark his first competitive appearance in months.
Nwakali had been absent from first-team duties for an extended period following reported disciplinary issues and a breakdown in his relationship with Barnsley’s management. The situation led to a prolonged spell on the sidelines, with the 27-year-old effectively frozen out of the squad.
During that time, tensions between both parties remained unresolved, leaving his future at the club uncertain.
Despite the difficult backdrop, the midfielder was named in the matchday squad and eventually called into action in the second half against Stevenage. While Barnsley were unable to avoid defeat, Nwakali’s introduction was seen as a notable step toward reintegration.
His return suggests a possible thawing in relations between player and club, with the coaching staff seemingly open to reintroducing him into the squad setup.
For Nwakali, the appearance represents a chance to restart his season and rebuild his standing within the team. Once regarded as one of Nigeria’s promising midfield talents, consistency and off-field issues have disrupted his career progression in recent years.
Barnsley will now be assessing whether the midfielder can contribute meaningfully in the remaining fixtures, as they look to strengthen squad depth in a demanding campaign.
With his long absence now over, the coming weeks could prove decisive for both player and club. If Nwakali can maintain discipline and deliver on the pitch, he may yet force his way back into regular contention.
