Turkish champions Galatasaray are closely tracking the situation of teenage striker George Ilenikhena as early doubts emerge over his adaptation to life in Saudi Arabia, opening the door to a potential European return for one of Nigeria’s most highly rated young forwards.

The 19-year-old joined Al-Ittihad in February 2026 in a high-value move from AS Monaco, but his start in the Saudi Pro League has been underwhelming.

Five appearances have so far produced no goals, and while expectations remain tempered due to his age, there is growing internal concern about his immediate impact.

He is under contract until 2029 following a deal worth approximately €33 million, underlining the scale of investment made by the club.

In Istanbul, Galatasaray’s interest is understood to be exploratory rather than advanced, but it is informed by a clear strategic logic.

Club decision-makers view Ilenikhena as a long-term attacking asset whose development could accelerate in a more competitive European environment.

A loan move is among the scenarios being assessed should his situation in Saudi Arabia fail to improve, while a permanent transfer has not been ruled out if conditions become favourable.

The timing is also notable given Galatasaray’s broader squad planning. With uncertainty surrounding the future of Victor Osimhen, who continues to attract attention from Europe’s elite, the Turkish side are quietly preparing alternatives in the forward line to safeguard their attacking depth.

Ilenikhena’s profile explains why he remains on the radar of several major clubs. Born in Lagos and raised in France, he broke into professional football early, becoming Ligue 2’s youngest goalscorer with Amiens SC at just 16.

His rapid rise continued at Royal Antwerp, where he became the youngest Nigerian-born player to score in the UEFA Champions League after netting a decisive goal in a win over Barcelona.

A move to Monaco followed in 2024 for €20 million, further cementing his reputation as a high-ceiling prospect. Standing at 1.85 metres, he combines physical strength with pace and a powerful left foot, capable of operating both as a central striker and in deeper attacking roles.
