Nigerian striker Gift Orban apologises after confrontation with fan following Verona defeat
Nigerian striker Gift Orban has issued an apology after confronting a supporter in a stadium parking area following Hellas Verona’s defeat to AC Milan in Serie A.
The incident took place after Verona’s 1-0 home loss on the final matchday at the Stadio Bentegodi, where tensions surrounding the club’s poor form appeared to spill beyond the pitch.
As Orban attempted to leave the stadium by car, he was reportedly targeted by a remark from a fan, prompting the forward to stop his vehicle and step out to confront the individual.
Witnesses at the scene included other supporters who had gathered nearby, some hoping to interact with players through autographs or photographs. The situation quickly drew attention, highlighting the growing frustration around the team’s performances.
Although Orban has since publicly apologised for his actions, the episode has generated wider discussion within Italian football.
Reaction has been particularly notable from former Juventus striker Gianfranco Zigoni, who offered a critical assessment of the player’s behaviour.
Speaking in comments reported by Complete Sports, citing an interview with Tutto Mercato Web, Zigoni pointed to the forward’s visible frustration during the exchange.
The 81-year-old suggested that, while emotions can run high after a disappointing result, players must remain mindful of their responsibilities.
He underlined the importance of maintaining respect for supporters, particularly during difficult periods for a club.
Zigoni noted that fans continue to attend matches out of loyalty and passion, even when results fall short of expectations.
“They are there for you too, and you should be grateful for that,” he stressed, reinforcing the idea that professional players must uphold a standard of conduct regardless of circumstances.
The incident serves as a reminder of the pressures faced by players during challenging spells, while also underlining the expectations placed upon them in their interactions with supporters.
