Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has singled out Kobbie Mainoo for special praise following what he described as the midfielder’s most complete performance for the club in a hard-fought victory over Chelsea.

In a demanding away fixture at Stamford Bridge, Mainoo delivered a composed and authoritative display that stood out even among a strong collective showing from United.

For Carrick, the performance carried extra significance given the midfielder’s limited preparation leading into the match, having only returned to light training late in the week.

“Kobbie didn’t train an awful lot really,” Carrick said afterwards. “He only did a little bit on Thursday and a little bit more yesterday. I wasn’t an awful lot, so credit to him for stepping into that one.”

Despite those constraints, the young midfielder played with maturity beyond his years, dictating phases of play and contributing both defensively and offensively. Carrick believes the performance marked a new benchmark in Mainoo’s development since his return to the club’s setup.

“I thought that was the best Kobbie’s played, certainly since I’ve been back here,” Carrick noted.

Mainoo’s composure under pressure proved particularly valuable in midfield, where he was tasked with containing Chelsea’s creative threats while also driving United forward. His duel with Cole Palmer was a key subplot in the contest, with both players attempting to influence the rhythm of the game in a tightly contested battle.

Carrick highlighted the youngster’s ability to adapt to different demands throughout the match, praising the variety and intelligence in his play.

“To step up and put so many phases or sides to his game tonight… I thought he looked so composed and so calm, he had a real presence about him, defended well.”

Against high-quality opposition and in a challenging atmosphere, Mainoo’s performance offered further evidence of his growing importance within United’s midfield.

Carrick emphasised that such displays underline the teenager’s potential to become a central figure for the club, particularly when tested against top-level opponents.

“It’s not easy when you’ve got good players around you and it was a good battle between him and Cole Palmer,” he added. “So he had to be right at it tonight but as you saw he had so much quality and composure in a tough environment really, to show us what he can do.”
