It’s a shame – Esperance coach Beaumelle blasts referee after Champions League final setback
Esperance coach Patrice Beaumelle has accused referee Omar Artan of influencing the outcome of a crucial CAF Champions League semi-final clash.
The defeat, played at the iconic Loftus Versfeld Stadium, saw Sundowns secure a place in the final for the second consecutive season, thanks to a decisive strike from Brayan Leone. The forward proved to be the difference-maker once again, having also scored in the first leg in Tunisia to complete a dominant aggregate performance.
While Sundowns celebrated progression, frustration boiled over in the Esperance camp, with Beaumelle directing his anger squarely at the officiating. Despite acknowledging the quality of the match and the atmosphere created by supporters from both sides, the French tactician expressed deep disappointment over key decisions.
“Tonight I’m very sad because two teams came with fantastic behaviour and to play fantastic football with this stadium football full – fans from Sundowns and Esperance,
And it’s a shame that once again that referee’s decision killed the game. For me, it’s a disaster, it’s where Africa must improve because it’s always a matter of referees.
And I’m very proud that it was a good game but in my opinion, the referee was not at a good level to be officiate such a semi-final.
It’s a pity because it was a very good game. Well done my boys, we did a very good game and I wish the best of luck to Sundowns in the final.”
Beaumelle’s comments highlight ongoing concerns around officiating standards in African competitions, a topic that has frequently sparked debate among coaches, players, and fans alike.
Despite his frustration, the Esperance coach found time to commend his players for their performance and sportsmanship, as well as extend goodwill to Sundowns ahead of the final. For the Tunisian giants, however, the pain of elimination will linger—especially with the feeling that the contest may have been decided by more than just football.
As Sundowns march on in pursuit of continental glory, this semi-final will be remembered not only for its quality but also for the controversy that followed.
