Saudi Arabia set to appoint Georgios Donis as Herve Renard’s successor ahead of World Cup
The Saudi Arabian Football Federation has reportedly reached a full agreement with Greek coach Georgios Donis to take charge of the Saudi Arabia national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, replacing Hervé Renard.
Reports emerging on Friday indicate that the federation has already informed Renard of its decision to part ways with him, bringing an early end to his second spell in charge.
The Frenchman had only returned to the role in October 2024, but a run of underwhelming performances ultimately derailed plans for him to see out his contract, which was due to run until 2027.
According to Al-Sharq Al-Awsat and Al-Ekhbariya, an agreement with Donis has been finalised, with an official announcement expected within the next two days once contractual formalities are completed. He is set to assume duties on May 22, immediately after the conclusion of the domestic season.
Donis, who is currently managing Al-Khaleej, is expected to oversee the national team’s final preparations for the global tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
His first assignment could be a friendly match against Ecuador national team, marking the beginning of his tenure with the Green Falcons.
Behind the scenes, discussions are also ongoing to strengthen the administrative structure of the national setup. Talks have reportedly been held with Fahd Al-Mufarraj of Al-Hilal and Hamed Al-Balawi, who has previously worked with Al-Ittihad and Al-Kholood.
Donis is set to become the 60th coach in the history of the Saudi national team, taking on the challenge of leading the side through a demanding World Cup campaign.
Saudi Arabia have been drawn in Group H, where they will face Spain national team, Uruguay national team, and Cape Verde national team in what promises to be a highly competitive group.
