Andre Onana denies rift with Cameroon FA
Cameroon goalkeeper André Onana has publicly addressed his prolonged absence from the Indomitable Lions setup, insisting there is no conflict between himself and the national team or the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), while hinting that internal personal disputes may be influencing his exclusion.
The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finalist has not been part of Cameroon’s squad since the 2025 AFCON, sparking widespread speculation over a possible fallout with the national team hierarchy. However, Onana has moved to clear the air, stressing that his situation is not rooted in institutional disagreement.
Onana emphasized his continued loyalty to his country and rejected suggestions of a breakdown with FECAFOOT or the Indomitable Lions technical setup.
“I have no issues with the national team, I have no issue with FECAFOOT,” Onana stated. “I disagree with an individual who is using FECAFOOT and the national team to settle scores. If you disagree, they’ll get rid of you.”
Although he did not name the person he was referring to, Onana suggested that personal grievances are being allowed to influence footballing decisions at the highest level, ultimately affecting his international career.
The former Inter Milan and Manchester United shot-stopper went further to claim that he had been pushed into international retirement against his will, describing the situation as painful but affirming his continued emotional connection to the national team.
“I’ve taken a lot of knocks for the love of our country. I was forced into retirement, so all I can do now is support our younger brothers,” he added. “I’m their number one fan, and I send them messages after matches to congratulate them.”
Despite his absence from the squad, Onana insists his commitment to Cameroon remains unwavering. He maintains contact with members of the current team, offering encouragement and support from afar as the Indomitable Lions continue their international campaigns without him.
The statement is likely to reignite debate in Cameroonian football circles, where questions about selection policies and administrative influence have frequently surfaced in recent years. Onana’s comments also highlight the growing tension between high-profile players and football authorities in Africa, where disputes over discipline, leadership, and governance have often spilled into the public domain.
For now, the goalkeeper remains on the outside looking in, but his message makes one thing clear: his connection to the national team has not been severed—only complicated.
