A major crisis has engulfed FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo after the club failed to appear for their scheduled league fixture against CS Don Bosco in Lubumbashi on Wednesday, April 15, with officials later confirming a 3-0 forfeit victory for Don Bosco.

What unfolded was not a logistical delay or administrative error, but the visible collapse of internal stability at one of the country’s most recognisable clubs.

Players reach breaking point

Behind the no-show lies a prolonged breakdown in trust between the squad and club management. Players, according to sources close to the team, refused to report for the match after weeks of unresolved financial grievances.

Despite a strong sporting campaign — marked by more than 14 victories this season — players have reportedly gone unpaid in salaries and match bonuses, creating growing frustration within the dressing room.

Wednesday’s fixture became the breaking point.

Leadership vacuum at the top

The crisis has been compounded by an absence of effective leadership. The club president has reportedly been unavailable since July, with political complications limiting his involvement in the club’s operations.

In his absence, decision-making has been left fragmented, with no clear structure to resolve financial disputes or stabilise day-to-day management.

Bukasa left to carry the burden

Head coach Guy Bukasa has effectively become the central figure holding the team together. Far beyond his technical duties, Bukasa has reportedly taken on responsibilities typically handled by club administration — including arranging transport, securing food, and ensuring fuel for team logistics.

Insiders describe a coach stretched to his limits, frequently appealing to players to remain committed amid worsening conditions.

On Wednesday, however, even those efforts were not enough.

Matchday collapse in Lubumbashi

On the day of the fixture, match officials and CS Don Bosco staff were present and prepared for kickoff. However, Lupopo players did not arrive at the stadium, and no official delegation was present to submit a team sheet or communicate a delay.

After waiting for confirmation that never came, officials proceeded with standard procedures that ultimately led to Don Bosco being awarded a 3-0 victory by forfeit.

A club with recent continental pedigree now in turmoil

The incident is particularly striking given Lupopo’s recent competitive record. The club featured in the CAF Champions League group stage this season and earned notable results, including elimination victories over Al Merrikh SC and Orlando Pirates.

That progress now contrasts sharply with the current internal breakdown, raising serious questions about sustainability and governance behind the scenes.

What comes next

The forfeit is expected to trigger further scrutiny from league authorities, while the club faces mounting pressure to address unpaid wages, restore leadership clarity, and stabilise the technical setup.

For now, Wednesday’s no-show stands as a stark warning: a team still capable of competing at high levels on the pitch is being undone by problems far from it.
