Santiago Canizares questions Vinicius future at Real Madrid

Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Santiago Canizares has delivered a blunt assessment of Vinicius Junior’s recent performances and future at the club.

He believes the Brazilian has not lived up to the expectations that come with his contract, status, and importance to the team.

“In my opinion, for two years now he hasn’t been playing at the level expected of him given his contract and status. Furthermore, he has been involved in many controversial situations that don’t improve Real Madrid’s image,” Canizares said. He stressed that selling a high-profile player is never straightforward, pointing out that even when Rodrygo was reportedly valued at 70–80 million euros, “no one offered even half that amount.”

For that reason, he argues, clubs often have to keep underperforming stars and hope they rediscover their best form. “It’s very easy to be a sporting director while sitting on the couch, but in real life, you have to consider what you want from a player and what’s being offered for him. However, if there’s a good offer, in my opinion, I would sell him,” he concluded.
