Eric Chelle to test new Nigeria players

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle has decided to use the upcoming Unity Cup to assess fresh talent as he continues reshaping the future of the Super Eagles.

The West African football heavyweights, who are set to defend their crown at the tournament scheduled for The Valley from May 26 to 30, are expected to parade a largely refreshed squad, with several new and emerging players likely to be handed opportunities on the international stage.

For Chelle, the competition is not just about retaining the title—it is about widening the talent pool and identifying players who can step into the national team setup for the long term.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, the Super Eagles coach outlined a clear recruitment-driven approach, confirming that he will use the Unity Cup as a scouting platform for both established prospects and new discoveries.

“The Unity Cup provides a platform to assess new players,” Chelle said. “I will comb Europe and invite new players of Nigerian descent, alongside those who were previously called up but never got the chance to feature. Top players from the Nigeria Premier Football League will also be considered, as I will be watching a number of domestic league games from now until the end of the season.”

His comments underline a deliberate shift toward inclusivity and competition within the squad, with players from both Europe and the domestic league set to be evaluated on equal footing.

Chelle further revealed that performances in the Unity Cup will directly influence future selections, while also drawing a clear line between the experimental nature of the tournament and the more competitive international fixtures ahead.

“For the big warm-up games in June against Poland and Portugal, I will feature my first team players,” he added. “These are games that can push us up the global ranking if we win them.”

The plan signals a dual-track strategy: experimentation at the Unity Cup, followed by full-strength deployment in high-profile friendlies designed to boost Nigeria’s global standing and sharpen the squad ahead of major competitions.

With Chelle intensifying his scouting efforts across Europe and monitoring domestic performances closely, the coming months could mark a significant reshaping of the Super Eagles setup under his leadership.
