El Shenawy hit with heavy ban and fine after referee confrontation
Mohamed El Shenawy has been handed a significant punishment by the Egyptian Professional Football League following an altercation with referee Mahmoud Wafa after Al Ahly SC’s clash with Ceramica Cleopatra FC.
The incident occurred after the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in the opening round of the Egyptian Premier League championship group. Although El Shenawy did not feature in the match, he confronted the referee at full-time over a penalty decision that went against his team.
In a statement released on its official platform, the League confirmed that the Al Ahly captain has been suspended for four matches and fined 2,500 Egyptian pounds after receiving two warnings in the same encounter.
The disciplinary body also imposed an additional fine of 50,000 Egyptian pounds on the goalkeeper for assaulting referee Mahmoud Wafa, underlining the seriousness of the offence.
Sanctions extended beyond the player, as Walid Salah El-Din, Al Ahly’s football director, was handed a one-match suspension along with a fine of 5,000 Egyptian pounds.
Furthermore, the League fined Al Ahly 20,000 Egyptian pounds due to members of the technical and administrative staff failing to adhere to regulations regarding distance from the VAR review area.
The decisions reflect the League’s firm stance on discipline and respect for match officials, sending a clear message about maintaining order and professionalism within Egyptian football.
