Mamadou Sakho reveals Jurgen Klopp fallout at Liverpool

Former Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has finally lifted the lid on the moment his Anfield career effectively came to an end under Jurgen Klopp, recalling a harsh punishment that followed a series of off-field lapses in 2016 pre-season.

The centre-back, signed from Paris Saint-Germain in 2013, saw his future crumble after a string of disciplinary breaches during the club’s tour of the United States. Klopp publicly explained his stance in blunt terms: “He missed the departure of the plane, he missed a session, and then was late for a meal.”

For Klopp, discipline was a line that could not be crossed. “We have some rules, and we have to respect them. If somebody doesn’t respect it. Then I have to react,” he said, making clear that no player was bigger than team standards. Sakho was sent home from the tour, dropped to the U23s and would never feature for Liverpool’s senior side again.

Sakho has since softened the narrative, insisting there was no lasting personal rift. “I always respect. I like his type of football; small things are always good to take as an excuse,” he reflected, while hinting there is more still untold: “One day I will speak all the truth will go out.” He left permanently in 2017 after a loan at Crystal Palace, closing a turbulent chapter of promise, punishment and regret.
