Al Hilal are leading the race to sign Mohamed Salah

Tottenham Hotspur legend Chris Waddle believes Liverpool will face a significant rebuilding task following the expected departure of Mohamed Salah, insisting that replacing the Egyptian forward will require more than a single signing.

Salah is set to leave Anfield at the end of the current season, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable nine-year spell in which he established himself as one of the club’s greatest players, delivering goals and silverware in abundance.

Speaking in comments reported by the Liverpool Echo, Waddle suggested the club should target Jarrod Bowen of West Ham United and Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United as part of a broader plan to fill the void left by Salah.

“Who can replace Mohamed Salah this summer? There aren’t many who play his style,” Waddle said.

“Bowen is probably the closest in terms of goals, although he is getting older. If West Ham were to be relegated, Liverpool could benefit from signing him for a couple of years.”

He added that Bowen could slot into the right-wing role, even if he cannot fully replicate Salah’s impact.

“I’m not saying he can replace him completely, but he’s a player who thrives running down the flank and creating chances in open spaces,” Waddle noted.

Waddle also underlined the scale of the challenge ahead, admitting that players capable of matching Salah’s goal output and overall influence are rare.

“There are players who can create chances, but I haven’t seen many who can score the number of goals Salah has for Liverpool,” he said.
