Olympique de Marseille head coach Habib Beye has urged teenage midfielder Ethan Nwaneri to quickly adjust to the physical and tactical demands of French football, despite expressing confidence in the Arsenal loanee’s long-term potential at the club.

Since taking over following the departure of Roberto De Zerbi, Beye has gradually integrated Nwaneri into his squad, primarily deploying the youngster as an impact substitute.

The 18-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance in limited minutes, most notably finding the net in Marseille’s recent victory over Lille OSC.

He was again introduced from the bench during the team’s defeat to AS Monaco, underlining Beye’s cautious approach to his development.

While the England youth international’s technical ability has drawn praise, Beye has made it clear that adaptation remains a key requirement.

“He is a great talent who needs to adapt to Ligue 1 and its intensity,” Beye said before the Monaco clash.

The Marseille coach believes that Nwaneri’s current contributions, though promising, only scratch the surface of what is expected at a club of Marseille’s stature.

His goal against Lille offered a glimpse of his attacking instincts, but Beye emphasized that consistency and physical resilience will be crucial if the youngster is to secure a more prominent role.

“Against Lille, he scored, but there are still aspects of his game that need to be much stronger,” he added.

Beye also highlighted the importance of mentality and awareness, stressing that Nwaneri must fully grasp the expectations that come with representing one of France’s biggest clubs.

Marseille’s competitive environment, coupled with the demands of Ligue 1, presents a steep learning curve for young players arriving from abroad.

Encouragingly, Nwaneri’s recent performances at international level with England’s Under-21 side have provided further evidence of his potential. However, Beye’s message remains clear: talent alone will not be enough.

“He needs to understand that he is arriving at a really top-level club. What is good is that he scored with his national team (England U21s).”
