Egypt better than Arab rivals – Ibrahim Hassan
Manager of the Egyptian national team, Ibrahim Hassan, has expressed satisfaction with their performance following their goalless draw against Spain in an international friendly played in Barcelona, describing it as a strong display under difficult conditions.
The Egyptian national team entered the match on the back of an emphatic 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, and managed to maintain their momentum with a disciplined performance against the European side despite failing to find the net.
Preparation Challenges Behind the Scenes
Speaking in an interview on ON Sport, Hassan revealed that the team’s preparations were far from smooth. He pointed to logistical difficulties, including repeated changes in accommodation and the uncertainty surrounding the Spain fixture, which was cancelled multiple times before being reinstated at the last minute.
According to him, the demanding schedule, which involved two high-profile away matches and extensive travel, placed significant pressure on the squad. Despite these setbacks, he credited the technical team, led by Hossam Hassan, for carefully studying opponents and building on the positives from the previous training camp.
“Egypt Is Superior to All Arab Teams”
Hassan made a bold statement regarding Egypt’s standing in regional football, insisting that the national team remains ahead of its Arab counterparts and continues to be a benchmark others aspire to challenge.
He emphasized that facing Egypt is always a major test for opponents, with teams often raising their level in pursuit of a positive result against the Pharaohs.
Despite his confidence, current rankings place Egypt 29th globally, behind Morocco, ranked 8th, and Algeria, ranked 28th among Arab nations.
Missed Opportunity to Face Argentina
Hassan also shed light on efforts to arrange high-profile friendlies, revealing that negotiations to face Argentina were at an advanced stage before ultimately collapsing.
He explained that the team quickly shifted focus to securing a match against Spain, even agreeing to play the fixture outside Egypt in order to ensure quality preparation against top opposition.
Coaching Offers Put on Hold
The Egyptian football official disclosed that the national team’s coaching staff has attracted interest from other countries, but any potential moves have been put on hold.
He stressed that the priority remains the national team, noting that the coaching duo is fully committed to Egypt’s campaign until after the next World Cup.
Disappointment Over Fan Behaviour
Hassan concluded by addressing the atmosphere during the match in Barcelona, expressing disappointment at the conduct of some Spanish supporters.
He described the booing during the Egyptian national anthem as regrettable, while commending the players for responding professionally on the pitch. He also called for greater respect toward national symbols, urging fans worldwide to honour both flags and anthems regardless of rivalry.
