Espanyol are preparing to take disciplinary action against Congolese defender Charles Pickel after he failed to return to the club on time following international duty with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Spanish side confirmed they are closely monitoring the situation after the player remained with his national team beyond the agreed period.

Pickel had been involved in DR Congo’s recent success, as the team secured a notable qualification against Jamaica, a result that was widely celebrated.

However, the positive outcome on the international stage has been overshadowed by uncertainty surrounding the player’s delayed return to club football. Pickel has yet to rejoin Espanyol in Spain, raising concerns within the club over professional obligations.

The situation is not isolated, as his compatriot Chancel Mbemba, who plays for Lille, is also reported to have remained with the national team beyond the expected timeframe.

This has further drawn attention to the broader issue of players balancing national team commitments with club responsibilities.

Espanyol head coach Manolo González addressed the matter, making clear that the club intends to act once the defender reports back.

“We are waiting for the player to return. When he is here, the club will take the necessary disciplinary measures ,” he said.

His comments underline Espanyol’s firm stance on maintaining discipline and ensuring that players adhere to agreed schedules following international engagements.

At present, the reasons behind Pickel’s delay have not been disclosed, leaving uncertainty over the circumstances that have kept him away from the club.

Despite this, the case highlights the challenges clubs often face when players return late from international duty, particularly after significant fixtures or celebrations.

Espanyol are now awaiting the defender’s arrival before proceeding with any formal action, with the outcome likely to depend on the explanation provided upon his return.
