Morocco eyes 2030 World cup final hosting

Tensions have emerged in the race to host the final of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, as Morocco is reportedly pushing to stage the showpiece event following a racism-related incident in Spain.

Spanish football has come under intense scrutiny after events at the RCDE Stadium, where a section of supporters booed the Egyptian national anthem and chanted anti-Islamic slogans during an international friendly between Spain and Egypt.

The incident has attracted widespread media attention, particularly given Spain’s role as a co-host of the 2030 World Cup alongside Morocco and Portugal.

Concerns have since been raised about the potential for similar occurrences during the global tournament, despite swift condemnation from Spanish authorities and the national football federation.

According to reports from Cadena SER, citing Moroccan outlet Koud, Morocco has formally expressed interest in hosting the World Cup final instead of Spain. The report suggests that FIFA is closely monitoring the situation, with Morocco believing it holds an advantage in the bid.

The claim is reinforced by assertions that Moroccan stadiums have not recorded incidents of this nature or severity, strengthening the country’s case as a suitable host for the tournament’s most prestigious match.

Spanish authorities have responded firmly to the controversy. The government, alongside several political parties, condemned the anti-Islamic and xenophobic chants heard during the match.

The case has since been referred to prosecutors, with Catalan police launching an investigation into the events.

The backlash has extended beyond politics, drawing criticism from within the football community. Lamine Yamal, one of Spain’s rising stars, voiced strong dissatisfaction with what transpired, reflecting broader outrage among fans and players alike.

Catalonia’s Sports Minister, Berni Alvarez, also expressed his “deepest displeasure” over the chants, while acknowledging delays in implementing protocols designed to address such incidents.

As discussions continue, the controversy has added a new dimension to preparations for the 2030 World Cup, with the hosting of the final now becoming a subject of heightened debate.
