Senegalese outfit Guédiawaye FC fume over heavy sanctions after AS Pikine clash

Guédiawaye FC has launched a strong protest after being hit with severe sanctions by the Senegalese Professional Football League following incidents linked to their match against AS Pikine.

The Senegalese outfit was handed sanctions by the Senegalese Professional Football League on 1 April following incidents that occurred on 29 March 2026 on the fringes of the matchday 21 clash against AS Pikine.

The ruling includes a ban on Guédiawaye supporters travelling to away matches for the next three fixtures, alongside a requirement for the club to play its next three home matches at a neutral venue. The decision has sparked immediate and strong criticism from the club, which believes the sanctions are both excessive and procedurally flawed.

“Guédiawaye FC wishes to express its deep outrage at the decisions taken following the incidents that occurred on the fringes of its match against AS Pikine last weekend – regrettable events marked by acts of violence which the club condemns in the strongest possible terms”

“Beyond the facts themselves, it is above all the league’s handling of this situation that has given rise to significant incomprehension and serious concerns”

“Guédiawaye FC notes several serious shortcomings in the conduct of the proceedings, notably: the absence of a thorough and adversarial investigation; failure to respect the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence; unjustified haste in taking decisions with significant consequences; and a lack of rigour in determining responsibility.”

While the club has condemned the violent incidents linked to the match, it is the league’s handling of the case that appears to be the primary source of frustration. Guédiawaye argues that due process was not properly followed and that the decisions were made too quickly, without sufficient investigation or clarity regarding accountability.

The sanctions are set to have a significant impact on the club’s immediate future. Playing home matches away from their traditional ground removes a key advantage, while the restriction on travelling supporters further isolates the team during away fixtures.

The controversy now raises broader questions about governance and disciplinary standards within the league. With tensions escalating, attention will turn to whether Guédiawaye FC pursues an appeal or if further dialogue can ease the dispute between the club and the league authorities.
