Rayane Bounida opts to represent Morocco over Belgium
Rayane Bounida has chosen to represent Morocco at international level, turning down the opportunity to continue his career with Belgium, according to reports in Belgian and Dutch media.
The 20-year-old midfielder, who plays for AFC Ajax, is understood to have informed the Belgian Football Federation of his decision to switch allegiance.
Born in Vilvoorde, Belgium, Bounida had previously been part of the Belgian youth setup.
The move follows months of discussions between the player, his representatives and Belgian football officials, who had been attempting to persuade him to remain with the national programme.
Despite those efforts, the player has now made clear his preference to represent Morocco.
Belgium’s Under-23 coach Gill Swerts and sporting director Vincent Mannaert were both involved in presenting the federation’s long-term sporting plans to Bounida.
The proposals were aimed at convincing the young midfielder of his future within the Belgian system.
However, those discussions did not alter his decision, with reports indicating that Bounida ultimately felt a stronger connection to Morocco.
The midfielder had previously been called up twice to Belgium’s Under-21 side, underlining his standing within the country’s emerging talent pool. His performances at club level have also contributed to his growing reputation.
This season, Bounida has featured in 18 league matches for Ajax, registering one goal and four assists.
His development in the Netherlands has seen him emerge as a promising prospect, attracting attention both domestically and internationally.
His decision to switch allegiance marks a significant moment in his career, as he now looks ahead to representing Morocco on the international stage.
