Moroccan fans reject AFCON title awarded off the pitch amid growing backlash

Moroccan football supporters have voiced strong opposition to the decision to award the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title to Morocco, with many describing the outcome as unacceptable and damaging to the country’s image.

The controversy follows the ruling by the Confederation of African Football to grant the title to Morocco at the expense of Senegal, a move that has already drawn criticism across the football community.

However, reaction within Morocco itself has intensified, with fans openly rejecting the decision.

On social media, supporters have expressed frustration and embarrassment, arguing that the manner in which the title was awarded undermines its value.

For many, the issue is not simply the decision itself, but the perception that the trophy was not earned on the pitch.

One widely shared reaction targeted Fouzi Lekjaa, highlighting the discontent among sections of the fanbase.

“Uncle Lekjaa, we know you’re powerful behind the scenes, but this time, it’s the last straw. Enough already, please, it’s a disgrace to win like this, it doesn’t do us any favors,” insisted a well-known streamer in Morocco.

Other voices echoed similar sentiments, questioning what meaning such a title would hold for future generations.

“What memories are we going to tell our children about this Africa Cup of Nations? We won a final on goal difference 50 years ago, and we hardly have any photos of that victory, and now you’re handing us the Cup by email… it’s too much, it’s shameful, we’re becoming a laughingstock around the world. Moroccans reject this victory ,” said another prominent figure on Moroccan social media.

Some responses adopted a more ironic tone, reflecting scepticism over how the victory could even be celebrated.

“When will the celebratory procession be? If I can fill up the car, I’ll be there,” another comment read.

Despite the official recognition of the title, many supporters appear unconvinced, viewing it as lacking the emotional weight typically associated with such achievements.

For them, success without competition does not carry the same significance.

While the decision may represent a milestone for Moroccan football authorities, the reaction among fans suggests a clear disconnect.

For many, this Africa Cup of Nations triumph remains overshadowed by controversy, leaving questions about its legitimacy and lasting legacy.
