Nice forward Elye Wahi eye Ivory Coast call up ahead of 2026 World Cup
Young forward Elye Wahi (23) has taken a significant step toward representing Côte d’Ivoire on the international stage, beginning the process of obtaining a biometric passport during a visit to the country’s Consulate General in Paris.
Wahi, who was loaned by Eintracht Frankfurt to OGC Nice during the winter transfer window, could soon be eligible to play for his parents’ homeland. If his application progresses smoothly, the forward may feature in Émerse Faé’s squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup in the United States. The Elephants, drawn in Group E, are set to face Germany, Ecuador, and Curaçao in the tournament.
Before the World Cup, Côte d’Ivoire will engage in crucial preparatory matches, including friendlies against South Korea and Scotland on 28 and 31 March, followed by a high-profile warm-up clash against France on 4 June.
Wahi, who has previously represented France at various youth levels, could be reunited with some of his former teammates on the international stage, adding depth and flair to the Elephants’ attack. His potential inclusion marks an exciting development for Ivorian football, as the nation looks to blend experienced internationals with emerging talent in its World Cup squad.
The move also underscores the growing trend of players with dual nationality opting to represent their heritage countries, boosting Côte d’Ivoire’s prospects on the global stage.
