Champions League: Arne Slot defends Mohamed Salah despite Liverpool’s defeat to Galatasaray
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has come to the defense of Mohamed Salah following the Reds’ 1-0 loss to Galatasaray in the Champions League round of 16.
The first-leg clash at Istanbul’s Sami Aliyin Stadium on Tuesday saw the Turkish side edge the English giants, leaving Liverpool searching for a response ahead of the return leg.
The Egyptian, who was substituted in the 60th minute for Jeremy Frimpong, struggled to find his rhythm, while teammate Florian Wirtz was replaced by Cody Gakpo in the 73rd minute.
Addressing questions about whether Salah and Wirtz had failed to influence the outcome, Slott emphasized their contribution.
“No, I think they were very much present, especially in the first half where they played a big part,” the Dutch manager told British outlet Rosing the Cop.
Slott added that both players came close to producing decisive moments.
“Salah and Wirtz were often near promising or even real scoring opportunities. At halftime, I felt we had missed an opportunity,” he said.
Concluding his remarks, Slott highlighted the players’ potential impact in future European matches.
“You can’t expect them to create 15 chances every game. They are usually exceptional players, and in another match, they will likely generate more opportunities than we did today.”
