South Africa: Mamelodi Sundowns secure 2-0 win to reclaim Betway Premiership lead

Mamelodi Sundowns moved back to the top of the Betway Premiership standings with a 2-0 victory over Orbit College FC at Olympia Park on Tuesday evening.

Two second-half goals proved decisive and propelled striker Iqraam Rayners to the top of the league’s scoring charts.

The first half was largely dominated by a disciplined Orbit College defence, which frustrated the visitors’ attacking efforts.

An early goal by Rayners was ruled out for offside by assistant referee Elphas Sitole within the opening 20 minutes, keeping the deadlock intact.

The breakthrough finally arrived after the interval.

Miguel Reisinho opened the scoring with a left-footed strike following a header from Nuno Santos, putting Sundowns ahead.

Minutes later, sustained pressure forced Ramahlwe Mphahlele into conceding a penalty against Khuliso Mudau.

Rayners stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick, sending a low, right-footed shot into the bottom left corner.

The goal not only sealed the 2-0 win but also marked Rayners’ 10th strike of the season, tying him with Junior Dion at the top of the Betway Premiership scoring table.

The victory boosts Mamelodi Sundowns to 47 points, giving them a three-point lead over nearest rivals Orlando Pirates, who are set to face Richards Bay at Orlando Amstel Stadium on Wednesday.

Following this win, Sundowns will shift focus to continental competition.

This Friday, they are scheduled to host Stade Malien at Loftus Versfeld Stadium for the first leg of their CAF Champions League quarter-final tie.

Tuesday’s performance highlighted Sundowns’ attacking cohesion and clinical finishing, reinforcing their position as strong contenders for both domestic and continental honours.
