Algerian international Rayan Aït-Nouri prepares for Bernabéu test as Manchester City face Real Madrid

Rayan Aït-Nouri is set to experience one of the most demanding stages in European football as Manchester City travel to face Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie.

For the Algerian international, the match represents his first encounter with the Spanish giants, a challenge that has long been considered one of the most difficult assignments in the competition.

The Bernabéu, known for hosting some of the tournament’s most dramatic moments, provides the backdrop for another meeting between two clubs that have become familiar rivals in Europe.

Encounters between Real Madrid and Manchester City have become a recurring feature of the Champions League knockout rounds in recent seasons.

The rivalry has grown into one of the most closely watched match-ups in European football, often determining which side progresses towards the latter stages of the tournament.

Several Algerian players have previously experienced the intensity of facing Real Madrid in Europe.

Ramy Bensebaini has come up against the Spanish side during his career, while former Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez built a notable record against the Madrid club.

Mahrez managed one goal and one assist across four meetings, helping his team claim three victories in those encounters.

For Aït-Nouri, however, the upcoming fixture will mark his first appearance against the Spanish champions.

The defender will step onto the Bernabéu pitch for the first time as his side attempts to secure an advantage before the return leg.

Manchester City’s manager Pep Guardiola is no stranger to this fixture either.

The coach has overseen several meetings between the two clubs and is aware that this season marks the fifth consecutive campaign in which City and Madrid have met in the Champions League knockout stages.

Real Madrid reached this phase of the tournament after overcoming SL Benfica, managed by José Mourinho, in the knockout play-offs with victories of 1-0 and 2-1.

The Spanish side had finished ninth in the league phase before progressing to the round of 16 for the 23rd time, a competition record.

Manchester City, meanwhile, advanced after finishing eighth in the league stage, securing their place in the round of 16 for the 12th time in the past 13 seasons.

The two teams have already faced each other numerous times in European competition.

A previous meeting earlier this season ended in a 2-1 victory for Manchester City in Madrid.

On that occasion, Rodrygo opened the scoring for the hosts in the 28th minute before City responded through Nico O’Reilly and Erling Haaland, whose penalty sealed the comeback.

Across their 15 encounters, both sides have recorded five victories each, with Manchester City scoring 26 goals compared with Real Madrid’s 25.

The latest chapter in the rivalry will be officiated by Italian referee Maurizio Mariani, assisted by Daniele Bindoni and Alberto Tegoni.

For Aït-Nouri, the match offers more than just a place in another Champions League fixture.

It represents an opportunity to show that he is ready to take on the responsibility once carried by Mahrez as one of Algeria’s leading figures on Europe’s biggest club stage.
