Algeria monitoring Chile-based goalkeeper Thomas Gillier for possible national team future
The Algerian Football Federation is reportedly tracking the progress of young goalkeeper Thomas Gillier, a player currently involved with the Chile national football team, as the North African side continues to assess its options between the posts.
Interest in the 21-year-old comes despite the recent addition of Luca Zidane to the Algerian squad.
The goalkeeper, who has five international caps, has helped provide a sense of stability in the position.
However, Algeria’s football authorities appear determined to continue scouting potential options for the future.
According to reports from the Chilean media outlet FutChile, the Algerian federation has been carefully observing Gillier’s performances in recent months.
The goalkeeper has been regularly called up to the Chilean national team since February, although he has yet to make an appearance for La Roja.
Gillier was born in Las Condes, a district in Santiago, and is believed to have Algerian heritage through his father.
That family link could make him eligible to represent Algeria national football team, widely known as the Fennecs.
Reports also suggest that he may be eligible to play for France, further highlighting the international options available to the young goalkeeper.
The player’s background and potential have reportedly attracted the attention of Algerian football officials, who are known to monitor dual-nationality players who could strengthen the national squad in the long term.
Gillier began his development at Club Deportivo Universidad Católica, one of Chile’s most established clubs, where he progressed through the youth ranks.
Standing at 1.86 metres tall, he has been widely regarded as a promising goalkeeper with room for further development.
Last summer, Gillier secured a move to Italian side Bologna FC 1909, although he was immediately loaned to CF Montréal in order to gain first-team experience.
During his time in Major League Soccer, the goalkeeper has already featured in 11 matches.
So far he has recorded one clean sheet, which came last Sunday in a 3-0 league victory against the New York Red Bulls.
On that occasion, Gillier produced a standout performance, making five saves to help secure the win.
While it remains unclear whether Algeria will move forward with any formal approach, the reports highlight the federation’s continued efforts to identify emerging talent who could strengthen the national team in the future.
