I held talks with Morocco to replace Walid Regragui - Xavi Hernandez reveals

Spain and Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez has confirmed he held discussions with Morocco about taking over as head coach of the Atlas Lions.

In an interview with La Vanguardia, the 2010 World Cup winner said his focus has shifted from club football to the international stage.

He explained that the intensity of club management makes it difficult to balance professional and family life.

“I’ve had some offers, one from Morocco and others from different countries,” Xavi said.

“Coaching a club is very intense, and it’s hard to manage with family responsibilities. That’s why I’d like to try with a national team.”

Xavi highlighted the benefits of managing a national side, including more time for preparation, family, and participation in major tournaments like the World Cup, European Championship, or Africa Cup of Nations.

“With a national team, you get more time for training, more time for family, and the opportunity to take part in the World Cup, the Euros, or even the Africa Cup of Nations. These projects excite me. With proper preparation and less stress, it’s something I’d enjoy,” Xavi added.

He also emphasized that the relentless pressure of club management is no longer appealing.

“Coaching a club is heavy pressure, and it’s not what I want now,” he concluded.

Speculation had circulated for months that the Moroccan Football Federation was negotiating with Xavi following Walid Regragui’s departure. Xavi has now confirmed those talks took place.

However, Morocco officially named Mohamed Ouahbi as the new head coach on March 9, replacing Regragui, who had led the Atlas Lions since 2022 and famously guided the team to the 2022 World Cup semifinals in Qatar before stepping down after recent mixed results.
