Esperance lose veteran forward Youssef Msakni for high-stake Champions League clash against Al Ahly
Patrice Beaumelle, head coach of Espérance Sportive de Tunis, has hinted that star forward Youssef Msakni is unlikely to feature in the crucial clash against Al Ahly SC in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League.
The Tunisian giants are preparing to host the Egyptian powerhouse in what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the continental tournament. The first leg will take place next Sunday at the iconic Stade Olympique de Radès, with kickoff scheduled for 11 p.m.
However, Esperance may have to navigate the high-stakes encounter without one of their most experienced attacking players. Speaking to the Tunisian newspaper Al-Sabah, Beaumelle revealed that Msakni is still struggling to regain full match fitness.
The veteran forward was notably absent from Esperance’s recent domestic fixture against Marsa’s Future, a game that served as the club’s final preparation ahead of the showdown with Al Ahly. His absence raised concerns among supporters, especially as the 34-year-old had initially been expected to be included in the squad.
Beaumelle explained that the decision was made after discussions with the player, emphasizing that Msakni still requires more time before returning to competitive action.
“I spoke at length with Msakni, who still needs time and regular training before he can play,” the French tactician said.
Despite acknowledging Msakni’s quality and importance to the team, Beaumelle insisted that the player’s physical condition does not yet allow him to participate in matches.
“Msakni needs no introduction, but he is not physically ready to play matches,” the coach added.
The possible absence of Msakni represents a significant blow for Esperance, given his vast experience and influence in big matches. Over the years, the Tunisian international has been a key figure for both club and country, renowned for his creativity, vision, and ability to deliver decisive moments on the biggest stages of African football.
Nevertheless, Esperance will still look to capitalize on home advantage in the first leg as they aim to secure a positive result before the return match in Egypt.
The decisive second leg of the quarter-final tie is scheduled for March 21 at the historic Cairo International Stadium, where Al Ahly will host the Tunisian side in front of what is expected to be a packed crowd.
With both clubs boasting rich histories in the CAF Champions League, the upcoming two-legged contest promises to deliver intense football drama as Esperance and Al Ahly battle for a place in the semi-finals of Africa’s premier club competition.
