Adil Aouchiche sends clear message to Petkovic on Algerian call-up
Adil Aouchiche has officially confirmed his commitment to the Algerian national team, revealing he has been eligible for selection since 2024.
The 23-year-old attacking midfielder, who recently joined Schalke 04, said he accepted the call without hesitation after being approached by coach Vladimir Petkovic.
In an interview with La Gazette du Fennec, the former Paris Saint-Germain youth prospect reflected on his career and expressed his long-standing desire to represent the Fennecs.
“It was my first contact with the federation. Petkovic had just arrived and wanted to test new players. I was one of them. I said yes to Algeria immediately, without thinking,” Aouchiche said.
The midfielder added that he promptly began the administrative process.
“In September, I went to the Algerian consulate in London to obtain an emergency passport. I have been eligible for selection since 2024.”
Aouchiche described the decision as a meaningful moment for both himself and his family.
“This approach moved me deeply. My whole family was happy. I’ve been in the preliminary selection process, and I’m continuing to work towards being officially called up.”
After emerging as one of France’s brightest talents, Aouchiche’s career path has seen him move across several clubs.
From PSG to AS Saint-Étienne, FC Lorient, Sunderland AFC, Portsmouth FC, and Aberdeen FC, he now finds himself at Schalke 04, where he has made an immediate impact with three assists in four games.
“When I saw Schalke, I jumped at the chance. It’s a historic club, with an incredible stadium and a great football culture,” he said.
Aouchiche stressed that his decision to represent Algeria is driven by long-term ambition rather than short-term opportunities such as the World Cup.
“Every player dreams of the World Cup, but I didn’t change my nationality to play one or two matches. My goal is to represent Algeria for the long term.”
He also believes his versatility and ability to adapt to different coaching systems give him a strong case for selection in Algeria’s competitive midfield.
” My strength lies in my versatility and my ability to quickly adapt to different coaching systems. I can bring a fresh perspective and help the team adjust its game.”
