Morocco emerge as favourite to host 2026 Finalissima amid Middle East unrest
The 2026 Finalissima, the high-profile showdown between European champions Spain and South American champions Argentina, faces uncertainty over its originally scheduled venue in Doha, Qatar.
Set for March 27 at Lusail Stadium, the match was billed as a “champions of champions” clash between two of football’s most storied national teams.
However, escalating tensions in the Middle East have cast doubt on Qatar’s ability to host the fixture as planned.
Following Iran’s missile strikes across the Arabian Peninsula and ensuing regional instability, the Qatar Football Association announced the indefinite suspension of all domestic and international matches.
In response, UEFA, CONMEBOL, and the Spanish and Argentine football federations are urgently exploring alternative venues ahead of the looming deadline to confirm a new location.
Safety and logistics are now the top priorities, and London has emerged as the frontrunner. The city’s proven experience in hosting major finals, coupled with its world-class stadiums, makes it a natural choice.
Morocco has also expressed interest, with Rabat officially offering to host the match should Qatar be unable to stage it, Reuters reports.
Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, a modern 70,000-seat venue, has already hosted the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final and is set for a Diamond League athletics meeting in May 2026.
It is also slated to host matches during the 2030 FIFA World Cup, highlighting its readiness for high-profile international fixtures.
Despite Morocco’s strong infrastructure and official bid, political and sporting considerations remain complex. Spain’s football federation has reportedly not endorsed the Moroccan option, amid sensitivities surrounding Morocco’s co-hosting of the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal.
Discussions between UEFA, CONMEBOL, FIFA, and the respective federations are ongoing, with a final decision on the Finalissima’s venue expected later today.
