Samir Chergui set to boost Algerian defence ahead of march friendlies
Algerian national team coach Vladimir Petkovic has received a boost as defender Samir Chergui resumes full training with Paris FC, easing concerns over the right-back position ahead of March friendlies.
The flank has been severely affected by injuries in recent months. Youcef Atal remains sidelined for several months after rupturing his Achilles tendon while playing for Al-Sadd SC.
Rafik Belghali has yet to recover from an ankle injury suffered during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with a relapse in February leaving his participation in the next international break uncertain.
Mohamed Farsi, out for months with a sports hernia, has also not returned to action.
Chergui’s recovery represents a critical opportunity for Petkovic, with the versatile defender having aggravated a hamstring injury during AFCON.
According to Le Parisien, he has returned to full training and could play for Paris FC against Strasbourg on 15 March.
If he quickly regains match fitness, he could strengthen Algeria’s right flank for friendlies against Guatemala on 27 March and Uruguay on 31 March.
For now, Mehdi Dorval remains the only fully available right-back option. Petkovic is also monitoring domestic talent, with Saâdi Redouani (USM Alger) and Reda Helaïmia (MC Alger) included in the extended squad to provide depth.
With the 2026 World Cup approaching, stabilising the right-back position is a priority.
Algeria’s defensive performance in Group J, alongside Argentina, Austria, and Jordan, could be decisive, making Chergui’s potential return a timely boost for Petkovic’s squad.
The coach’s focus remains on restoring balance and ensuring that key defensive roles are adequately covered as the Fennecs prepare for a crucial phase in World Cup preparations.
