French-Ivorian Jeremy Jacquet set for shoulder surgery after horror injury ahead of Liverpool move
Jeremy Jacquet’s eagerly anticipated switch to Liverpool has been overshadowed by a fresh injury setback, with the young defender now scheduled to undergo shoulder surgery following a painful incident in Ligue 1.
The 19-year-old French-Ivorian sustained the injury during Rennes’ 3-1 defeat to Lens on February 7, when he was forced off after dislocating his left shoulder.
Initial assessments led to the club holding off on immediate surgical intervention, opting instead for further medical evaluation. However, Rennes have now confirmed that an operation is unavoidable.
“Jérémy Jacquet is set to undergo surgery,” the club announced. “On the pitch against Lens on February 7th, Jérémy Jacquet was forced to leave the game early due to a left shoulder injury. Following medical examinations, surgery has been scheduled in the coming days. Stade Rennais F.C. wishes him a speedy recovery.”
The development comes at an untimely moment for Jacquet, who recently agreed a deal to join Liverpool at the end of the season. The plan was for the France youth international to remain at Rennes for the remainder of the campaign before completing his move to Merseyside in the summer. Instead, his progress has been halted almost immediately after committing to the Premier League club.
There is growing concern that the injury could prematurely end his season under Franck Haise. Reports in France indicate that the likelihood of a return before the campaign concludes is slim, effectively ruling him out of contention for France’s squad at this summer’s World Cup.
This is not Jacquet’s first shoulder issue. Earlier in the 2024/25 season, while on loan at Clermont, he spent a month sidelined with a similar problem. The recurrence will inevitably be monitored closely by Liverpool’s medical team.
Encouragingly, the projected recovery period stands at four to six months, meaning Jacquet is expected to regain full fitness in time for pre-season preparations with his new club.
