Court of Appeal overturns ruling against Franco-Tunisian striker Wissam Ben Yedder as legal battle takes new twist
The legal case involving France international of Tunisian descent, Wissam Ben Yedder and his brother, has been overturned following appeals court ruling.
The Aix-en-Provence Court of Appeal delivered its decision on Thursday, effectively annulling a November ruling that had paved the way for Ben Yedder and his brother, Sabri, to stand trial on charges of rape.
The court’s latest verdict represents a significant shift in the case. Lawyers representing the Ben Yedder brothers welcomed the decision, arguing that the original accusations were based on what they described as a flawed interpretation of the evidence. The defence maintained that several elements of the case lacked both factual and legal foundation — a position the appeals court appears to have upheld in part.
In essence, the court determined that there were insufficient grounds to proceed with certain charges against the pair, thereby cancelling the earlier decision.
Ben Yedder, 35, has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has repeatedly maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. Those close to the former French international believe the ruling reflects that his arguments were carefully considered during the appeal process.
On the football front, the experienced forward recently signed a six-month contract with Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in January. He previously enjoyed prolific spells with AS Monaco and Toulouse FC, establishing himself as one of Ligue 1’s most consistent goal scorers.
At international level, Ben Yedder was part of the France national football team squad that lifted the UEFA Nations League trophy in 2021.
While the legal situation may not be fully closed, Thursday’s decision marks a notable turning point in a case that has drawn significant public attention.
