Libya’s rebuild gathers pace as MLS talent Ayoub Lajhar commits internationally

Libya appear set to strengthen their defensive ranks with emerging talent Ayoub Lajhar edging closer to an international switch following direct contact from national team head coach Aliou Cissé.

The FC Cincinnati defender has reportedly agreed to represent the Mediterranean Knights, marking a significant step in Libya’s ongoing effort to rebuild through dual-nationality players competing abroad.

The 21-year-old Libyan-American has quickly risen into prominence since completing a move to Major League Soccer side FC Cincinnati earlier this year from Connecticut.

Lajhar made an immediate impression on his debut, registering two assists in a commanding 9-0 victory over Dominican outfit O&M in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, a result that secured progression to the Round of 16 against Mexican giants Tigres UANL. His confident displays have not gone unnoticed by Libya’s technical bench.

Speculation intensified in recent days after reports circulated on social media suggesting that the Libyan Football Federation had initiated discussions with the highly rated defender regarding a senior national team call-up.

Sources close to the situation have since confirmed that Cissé personally reached out to the player to outline Libya’s long-term project and his potential role within the squad.

The discussions appear to have produced a positive outcome, with Lajhar signalling his willingness to commit his international future to Libya despite holding dual nationality.

An official invitation is now expected during the March international window, when Libya will face Niger and Benin in friendly matches scheduled to take place in Morocco. The fixtures form part of preparations ahead of qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Libya’s renewed recruitment drive reflects a broader ambition to reverse years of continental disappointment. The Mediterranean Knights have failed to qualify for seven consecutive AFCON tournaments, including the 2025 edition in Morocco, while also missing out on the most recent Arab Cup in Doha. Integrating young overseas-based prospects has therefore become central to the federation’s rebuilding strategy.

Before his MLS breakthrough, Lajhar developed with the American Huskies, making 52 appearances across three seasons and finishing his final campaign at Connecticut as the club’s leading creator with seven assists.
