2030 World Cup: Marrakech Stadium closed for renovation works
The Marrakech Stadium is poised to close in the coming days as Morocco begins an extensive renovation ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The upgrades, part of Morocco’s preparations to co-host the tournament with Spain and Portugal, are designed to align the venue with FIFA’s technical standards. Officials report the stadium will remain closed until the work is completed and final certification is secured.
A major change will see the removal of the athletics track, converting the stadium from a multi-purpose arena into a football-only facility. Some seating areas will also be reconfigured to bring fans closer to the action on the pitch.
Capacity is expected to increase to around 46,000 from the current 41,000, following recommendations from FIFA inspection visits. Alongside structural changes, the project includes technical and logistical upgrades to meet international certification requirements, ensuring the venue is ready to host World Cup matches.
During the renovation, Kawkab Marrakech will relocate its home fixtures to El Harti Stadium.
This refurbishment is one of several infrastructure initiatives underway as Morocco advances its commitments for the 2030 World Cup.
