Barcelona’s physical surge reflects Hansi Flick’s hidden advantage, but peak is still to come

Barcelona’s impressive start to the season has been built on more than results and technical quality, with the Spanish side also showing a clear physical advantage over their opponents.

Despite Hansi Flick warning that Barcelona would not reach 100% of their physical condition before the international break, the team have begun the campaign covering greater distances and winning more duels than many of their rivals.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Barcelona’s players have looked like “aircraft” on the pitch, including against physically strong opposition. Feyenoord were beaten 5-1 in Barcelona’s opening Champions League match, but the result was accompanied by a dominant physical display.

A key figure behind that improvement is Benjamin Kugel, Barcelona’s new fitness coach, who joined the club at Flick’s direct request. He moved quickly to introduce his methods, with particular emphasis on improving each player’s fitness according to their individual needs and abilities.

Flick issued his warning more than a month ago after Barcelona’s pre-season friendly against Udinese. He said the team would not be at their best physically until after the international break, pointing to the impact of the World Cup and the large number of international matches played by several members of his squad.

Barcelona’s early condition may even have surprised Flick, with Kugel implementing his ideas more quickly than expected.

The German coach initially worked with players who had not taken part in the World Cup before the international players joined the group. Those returning from international duty also appeared to be in excellent physical shape.

Kugel is known for his demanding approach and devotes significant time to creating individual training plans. His aim is to produce the best possible version of every player, and his influence is already becoming increasingly visible in competitive matches.

Barcelona cover 6.3km more than Feyenoord

UEFA’s figures provide clear evidence of Barcelona’s physical progress. Against Feyenoord, Barcelona covered 120 kilometres, compared with 113.7km by the Dutch side a difference of 6.3km in Barcelona’s favour.

The comparison is particularly significant because Barcelona have sometimes been behind their opponents in total distance covered in previous seasons.

In another example, Real Madrid covered 108.3km against Inter Milan the previous day, while the Italian side reached 117km.

Barcelona’s figures were also markedly better than those recorded in their most recent Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid at Spotify Camp Nou. Barcelona lost that quarter-final match 0-2, having covered about 112km compared with Atletico’s 118km.

Improvement also evident in duels

Barcelona’s physical progress is not limited to running statistics. Data from SofaScore show Flick’s side have won the majority of their duels against most of their La Liga opponents this season.

They won 60% of their duels against Elche, 56% against Rayo Vallecano and 57% against Valencia.

The only match in which they did not clearly hold the advantage was against Athletic Bilbao, where Barcelona narrowly lost the duel count, winning 49% compared with Athletic’s 51%.

In the Champions League, Barcelona won 51% of their duels against Feyenoord, compared with 49% for the Dutch team.

Flick maintains that Barcelona have not yet reached their maximum physical level. If they sustain these figures, their performances could improve further as the season progresses, allowing their technical quality to emerge even more clearly.
