Lamine Yamal closes in on Kylian Mbappe’s Champions League record

Lamine Yamal moved within one goal of Kylian Mbappe’s record for Champions League goals scored before turning 20 after finding the net for Barcelona in their 5-1 victory over Feyenoord.

The 19-year-old scored Barcelona’s fifth goal with a direct free-kick in the 77th minute at Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday, in the opening round of the competition.

That strike took Yamal’s Champions League total before his 20th birthday to 13. He had entered the match with 12 goals in 34 appearances in the tournament.

Yamal is now level with Mbappe, who scored 13 times in 23 Champions League matches before turning 20. The Real Madrid forward remains joint-top of the list, although Yamal has another full season under the age of 20 in which to move ahead of him.

Yamal, who was born on 13 July 2007, already holds two age-related Champions League records. He is the player to have scored the most goals in the competition before turning 18, with five, and also has the highest total before turning 19, with 11.

Erling Haaland is third on the list, having scored 10 goals in only eight Champions League matches before reaching the age of 20. The Manchester City striker therefore has the best scoring rate among the three players.

Yamal’s latest goal came as Barcelona began their Champions League campaign with a convincing victory over Feyenoord, while also bringing him closer to Mbappe’s landmark total.
