Asisat Oshoala Hails 2023 Women’s World Cup as career highlight
Super Falcons and Al Hilal forward, Asisat Oshoala, has described the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia as the most memorable tournament of her career with the Nigeria national team, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Speaking to Ghanasoccernet, the prolific striker emphasized that every competition is special to her because of the passion and commitment she brings to the pitch.
“Every tournament is special to me because I give my all in every competition. Whether it is WAFCON or the World Cup, I approach each game with the same passion and energy because I genuinely love football,” Oshoala said.
However, she singled out the 2023 World Cup as a standout, highlighting key matches against Australia and England.
“Playing against Australia at their home was particularly special, and our match against England was another unforgettable moment,” she added.
Oshoala noted that those performances reflected the steady growth of the Nigerian women’s national team on the global stage. The Super Falcons, ranked 40th by FIFA entering the tournament, tied reigning Olympic champions Canada, defeated hosts Australia, and took eventual finalists England to extra time and penalties before bowing out in the round of 16.
She also recalled the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the team showed resilience after falling two goals behind.
“Those moments showed how much the Nigerian team is evolving. At WAFCON in Morocco, being two goals down tested us, but fighting back together made the victory even sweeter,” Oshoala said.
Notably, Oshoala was omitted from the latest Super Falcons squad named by Head Coach Justine Madugu for the upcoming pre-WAFCON friendlies against Cameroon in Yaounde.
