Glasner hopeful French-Congolese Jean-Philippe Mateta’s season is not over
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner remains optimistic that striker Jean-Philippe Mateta will feature again this season, insisting the forward’s campaign is far from finished despite an injury that threatened to derail both his form and future.
Mateta is currently undergoing rehabilitation after sustaining a knee problem that also led to the collapse of a proposed January transfer to AC Milan.
The failed move intensified concerns over the severity of the issue, but subsequent medical assessments delivered encouraging news for Palace, confirming surgery would not be required and opening a pathway toward recovery.
Speaking ahead of Palace’s UEFA Europa Conference League playoff victory over Zrinjski, Glasner struck a hopeful tone when questioned about the striker’s chances of returning before the campaign concludes.
“I hope so, that’s the plan. He’s working hard on his rehab,” Glasner said.
The Austrian coach’s confidence reflects growing belief within the club that Mateta’s absence may prove temporary rather than season-ending.
Specialists concluded the injury was less serious than initially feared, allowing the French forward to pursue a structured rehabilitation programme instead of undergoing an operation.
Mateta’s situation has carried broader implications for Palace’s attacking plans. The 29-year-old had managed knee discomfort for several months while continuing to play, demonstrating his importance to Glasner’s system before being forced into recovery.
With the Eagles balancing domestic commitments and European ambitions, his potential return could provide a timely boost during the decisive phase of the season.
