Kylian Mbappe prioritises 2026 World Cup as knee injury rules him out for Real Madrid
Kylian Mbappe is set to miss Real Madrid’s crucial Champions League play-off second leg against Benfica as he manages a knee problem that has raised long-term concerns.
Spanish outlet Cadena SER reports that the 27-year-old is dealing with what appears to be a chronic issue in the lateral ligament of his left knee.
Mbappe initially tried to push through the discomfort in training but was forced to stop after feeling significant pain. Rather than risk aggravating the injury, the French star has opted for caution, with the 2026 World Cup in June weighing heavily on his mind.
The forward does not want to jeopardise his chances of leading France on the biggest stage and has therefore decided not to rush his return to action. While there is no exact timeline for his comeback, early indications suggest he could be sidelined for a few weeks.
His absence is a major blow for Real Madrid, given his status as their main goal threat, but the club will be equally aware of the need to protect his long-term fitness ahead of a defining year for both player and country.
