Boost for DR Congo as striker Yoane Wissa returns to training ahead of crucial 2026 World Cup playoff
Democratic Republic of Congo forward Yoane Wissa has resumed training with Newcastle United F.C., handing both club and country a timely boost ahead of a decisive run of matches.
The 28-year-old had been sidelined since 10 February through injury, missing several key fixtures for the Magpies. However, after completing his rehabilitation, Wissa is now back in full training and could make his return to competitive action as early as Tuesday, 24 February.
Head coach Eddie Howe hinted that the Congolese striker may feature in the UEFA Champions League play-off second leg against Qarabağ FK at St James’ Park. His potential inclusion would provide Newcastle with additional firepower as they look to secure progression.
Wissa’s comeback also carries major significance for the DR Congo national football team. The attacker previously missed the Africa Cup of Nations due to injury, but his recovery now raises hopes that he will be available for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-off Tournament.
The Leopards are scheduled to contest the decisive play-off on 31 March, and having Wissa fit and match-ready would be a major lift as they bid to book their place on the global stage.
With both Newcastle and DR Congo entering critical phases of their respective campaigns, Wissa’s return could hardly have come at a better time.
