Danish-Nigerian Patrick Dorgu tops Man United absentees list ahead of Everton clash

Manchester United’s push for a top-four finish faces a fresh test on Monday night, with Patrick Dorgu headlining a trio of absentees as the Red Devils prepare to meet Everton on Merseyside.

With the season entering a decisive stretch, United travel to the Hill Dickinson Stadium knowing that momentum is on their side but squad depth will again be scrutinised.

Dorgu’s thigh injury keeps him sidelined, while defensive partner Matthijs de Ligt remains unavailable due to a lower back problem. Midfielder Mason Mount also misses out, continuing his recovery from a separate issue.

Defensive reshuffle required

Dorgu’s absence is a notable setback. The Dane has added balance and athleticism to United’s backline in recent weeks, and his unavailability forces interim manager Michael Carrick into another defensive recalibration. De Ligt’s continued recovery compounds the challenge, depriving the side of composure and leadership at the heart of defence.

Carrick is expected to turn to the experience of Harry Maguire alongside Lisandro Martinez, with Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw likely to occupy the full-back roles. While United have coped admirably during their recent resurgence, the margin for error narrows as the race for Champions League qualification intensifies.

Further forward, Mount remains on the treatment table, though there is cautious optimism surrounding his progress. Carrick offered a measured update on Friday.

“Yeah, Mason is getting closer. I think we’ve been patient, so we don’t want to push anything… We want him back, and he can have a big impact. He’s getting closer, which is good for us.”

Momentum meets motivation

United have not played since their stalemate away at West Ham, a result that extended their unbeaten league run to nine matches. The week-long break has offered valuable recovery time, allowing Carrick to fine-tune preparations as his side aim to consolidate their position inside the top four.

Since stepping into the dugout, Carrick has overseen a notable upturn in form, transforming a faltering campaign into one brimming with possibility. Champions League qualification, once a distant objective, is now firmly within reach. Securing European football would not only cap an impressive revival but also strengthen Carrick’s case for the role on a permanent basis.

Everton, however, carry their own incentive. The Toffees claimed a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford in November and are seeking a first league double over United since the 2013-14 season. Yet their recent home form offers little encouragement, with six matches at Goodison Park without a win in all competitions.
