Pitso Mosimane not shutting the door on Mamelodi Sundowns return

Legendary South African coach Pitso Mosimane has addressed speculation about a possible return to Mamelodi Sundowns and expressed interest in a second stint with Bafana Bafana.

Rumours emerged late last year suggesting Sundowns had approached Mosimane about rejoining the club, sparking excitement among supporters at Chloorkop.

While the calls for his return eventually faded as head coach Miguel Cardoso delivered crucial results, “Jingles” has not ruled out a comeback.

Speaking on the SMWX Podcast, Mosimane acknowledged the possibility:

“Ja, I’ve seen on social media (Sundowns fans calling for his return), I know that. Look, it’s possible, anything is possible, never say never in life. You know I was laughing when I saw Mike Tyson going back to boxing, and I said, ‘Ah, it’s possible, hey!’,” Mosimane said.

“(Floyd) Mayweather came back, George Foreman came back, right? So I don’t know. But yes, it is possible, why not? It’s possible, it’s just that sometimes you’ve got to…I also need to stay humble and contribute, because you know, when you go to four (CAF) Champions League finals and you win three.

“And you go to the FIFA Club World Cup and bring bronze medals, the third best team in the world, two times right? Playing against Bayern and all those (big clubs), the FIFA Club World Cup is the biggest. Also, you need to shift, come down and be humble, it’s home now,” the veteran coach said.

The Kagiso-born coach also expressed a strong desire to return to the national team after Hugo Broos retires following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“Myself, I’m interested (in Bafana job), because I’ll tell you one thing, it’s the medal I want to close everything (with), that’s the medal I don’t have on the continent,” Mosimane said.

“So I would love to do that with Bafana and win the AFCON, that’s the one I want. It’s possible, but I’m not campaigning. The football association will put whoever they think is right, but if you ask me today, ‘Would you sign the contract?’ I’d sign it today, because it means a lot to me and I think we’re at the right time, with the right generation,” the former Bafana coach added.

Mosimane has been out of club management since leaving Esteghlal in January last year, but his comments leave the door open for a potential return to both domestic and international coaching roles.
