CAF report shocks Morocco as AS FAR fans blamed in Cairo clash
Moroccan football circles have been left stunned after the CAF match observer’s report condemned AS FAR fans for their role in the ugly scenes during the CAF Champions League game against Egypt’s Al Ahly in Cairo.
The group-stage match at Cairo International Stadium ended with both teams already through to the quarterfinals, but the night was overshadowed by clashes on the pitch and in the stands. Players from both sides became embroiled in confrontations after heated exchanges, while tensions in the stands escalated as supporters reacted angrily.
Egyptian media outlets initially placed most of the blame on the visiting fans, circulating videos they claimed showed AS FAR supporters attacking Al Ahly players.
Moroccan outlets responded by accusing sections of Al Ahly’s crowd of targeting the Moroccan team as they left the pitch at half-time. AS FAR later issued an official statement condemning what it described as “unsporting behaviour” from some Al Ahly fans and reported bottle-throwing that threatened the safety of players and staff.
CAF confirmed in a statement that the incidents were “unacceptable” and referred the case to its disciplinary committee.
Moroccan newspaper Assabah has now revealed that Libyan match observer Jamal Embie’s report specifically identifies AS FAR fans as the instigators, prompting CAF’s disciplinary body to demand an official response from the club within 72 hours.
This version of events contradicts the referee’s and general coordinator’s reports, and has been described by local outlet le360 sport as a “shock” that has sparked fierce debate in Morocco.
