Rwanda and Congo continued their preparations for the 2020 African Nations Championship with a friendly encounter on Friday in Kigali. The match, played at the Amahoro Stadium, ended in a goalless draw, reflecting a tightly contested battle between the two sides as they fine-tune their squads ahead of the tournament in Cameroon.

Having already secured qualification for CHAN 2020, scheduled from April 4 to 25, both teams are using these preparatory fixtures to build cohesion and sharpen their tactical approach. For Rwanda, this was another frustrating outing in front of goal. Earlier in the week, the Amavubis were also held to a 0-0 draw by Cameroon, and they once again failed to convert their chances against the Congolese side.

Despite some promising attacking movements and a handful of opportunities for each team, neither Rwanda nor Congo managed to break the deadlock. Defensive discipline and organization prevailed throughout the 90 minutes, leaving the scoreboard unchanged at the final whistle.

For Congo, the result marks a second consecutive match without a victory. The Red Devils will be looking to address their attacking inefficiencies before the start of the continental competition. At the upcoming edition of the African Nations Championship, Congo has been drawn into a challenging group alongside Libya, DR Congo, and Niger. With regional rivals and experienced opponents in their path, improvements will be necessary if they hope to advance beyond the group stage.

Rwanda, meanwhile, faces an equally demanding task. The Amavubis have been placed in Group C, where they will compete against defending champions Morocco, Uganda, and Togo. The presence of Morocco, one of the tournament favorites, adds extra pressure on Rwanda to raise its level of performance.

Although goalless, the friendly provided valuable match experience for both teams. Coaches were able to evaluate player fitness, test tactical adjustments, and observe combinations under competitive conditions. With the tournament fast approaching, every minute of preparation counts.

As CHAN 2020 draws nearer, Rwanda and Congo will aim to turn solid defensive displays into more balanced performances, particularly by improving their efficiency in front of goal. The draw in Kigali highlights the work still to be done but also demonstrates that both sides are capable of maintaining defensive stability ahead of the continental showdown in Cameroon.
